Free Flash Gels – UK Strobing

flashgels

How do you fancy getting 300 free colour gels for your flashgun / strobe ? Well read on, for how to do this in the UK.

Firstly full recognition has to go to Strobist site, that shared how to do this within the US.  On the same theme, follow these steps in the UK.

  1. Go to Lee Filters website & using their Contact Us page (click top right “contact support”), ask for a free sample pack of their coloured Gels.
  2. Within a week you should receive a sample pack of about 300 different gels.  Amazingly enough these are just about big enough to cover the front of a Canon 580EX, Nikon SB800 etc.
  3. Dismantle the pack & take care to keep the piece of paper behind each gel you want to use, which described the gel in full
  4. Cut the paper description in half, just to the left of the description.
  5. Place the 2 halves either side of the gel, overlapping by say 3mm
  6. Using clear sellotape, now fix the paper strip to the gel.  I overlapped the selotape by about 5mm on to the gel for a firm fixing.
  7. Wrap sellotape around the rest of the paper, to provide a durable coating.
  8. You should now have a gel that if you place in front of flashgun & bend paper sides, around the sides of flashgun, you can simple use a rubber band to hold the gel in place.
  9. Happy Strobing

  1. I’d better not get a “Nice try!” reply from them! They’ll probably get wise to this after a few requests 😉 Thanks for the tip, I’ll report back if I get the gels :)

  2. Just thought I would say thank you for the gels contact, I actually put ‘Photographer’ in the ‘Occupation’ box but did not expect a reply.
The gel samples arrived today and I only asked for them two days ago!! how’s that for service!:)

  3. Have updated link above for Contact Us. No idea if they are still sharing packs, but if you try & it works out, let us know.

  4. Hello peeps,
I thought I’d just add these links for any one in the UK.

    Stage Electronics ‘http://www.stage-electrics.co.uk/productSearch.aspx?sp=All+Sites&s=swatch&x=0&y=0’

    & Flints.co.uk ‘http://www.flints.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=roscolux&PN=Rosco_Roscolux.html#aROSRLSB’

both send out swatch books (Very quickly may I add!). I now have 7 swatch books to play around with.

I also cut out a rectangle of clear plastic from some ‘blister pack’ packaging like you get with hardware goods which require tin snips to open, & scored/folded into a gel holder which I attach with a black elastic band. Very simple, clean & the gels just slide in & out.

  5. I hardly leave remarks, however after reading through
a few of the comments here Free Flash Gels – UK Strobing |.
I do have 2 questions for you if you don’t mind. Could it be simply me or does it look as if like a few of these
remarks come across like they are left by brain dead people?
😛 And, if you are writing at other social sites, I would like to keep
up with anything fresh you have to post. Would you list of the complete urls of all your social
sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

  6. Hi, I don’t get much chance to post these days as I retired from wedding and portrait photography a few years back. I now shoot mainly cars which is my main hobby.

Re others comments, I sometimes think something gets lost in translation for those who don’t have English as their first language.

    Thanks for post anyway
