Gloucestershire Photographer – How to add a Welcome page to Facebook

I’ve been asked by several people how I managed to add a “WELCOME” page / tab to my Gloucestershire Portrait Photographer Biz page on Facebook. Well a welcome page is key to your Business page on Facebook, as the saying go “1st impressions count” !

If you want to see the Welcome page for Gloucestershire Portrait Photographer in full, then go to Facebook & in the search box enter …. wait for it …. Gloucestershire Portrait Photographer ;)

Anyway I digress, here are the steps you need to take to add a Welcome page to facebook, or any other kind of page you want. Click here for

  • 1 :- You really want to use HTML for your Welcome page, so add the Facebook App Static FBML
  • 2 :- Following the above link, click the “Add to my page” link.
  • 3 :- Back on your Business page from the wall page, you should see option to “Edit Page” (top left) . Click this
  • 4 :- Page down options until you get to “Static FBML”. Click the pencil top right & choose “edit”
  • 5 :- You will now be shown a box for your page title, plus main content area. Don’t enter anything yet, as there appears to be a bug with the software
  • 6: – The bug seems to be related to creating you 1st page….. it doesn’t show on your Facebook. Instead click “Add another FBML box” at bottom
  • 7:- The new page called “FBML 1″ will be added to list at bottom of page. Click “edit” against it
  • 8:- Now, enter title for your page …eg “Welcome” & the enter your html for main content. Save your content
  • 9:- Now to add your page to a tab. Go back to Step 4 , & this time against Static FBML choose “Application Settings”, & click “add” against tab.
  • 10:- Go back to your main page & add the tab “Welcome”. Re-order tabs as you see fit
  • 11:- Final step if you want “Welcome” page to be landing page for all visitors. Go back to Step 4 & choose “Wall settings”
  • 12:- Choose “Default Landing Tab” as “Welcome”
  • There you have it. A pretty simple process to add a professional look & feel to your Facebook Biz page :)

If you found this of use , please feel free to pass on link to others. In addition please consider becoming a fan of my facebook Business page, to ensure you stay up to date with tips & tricks I share there.

22 January, 2010 - 8:52 am Dave - Had the following question :- "Hi, I had a question about your instructions about creating a FB welcome page. On the photo on your site there are no ads on the right side of the page, but when I go to it now there are. The reason I'm asking is I want to make sure the width/setting of our page is right. We set it a page with no ads but now the ads are bleeding into it. Would appreciate your thoughts about settings suggestions, thanks". A: Unfortunately the Ads are always present, as this is how Facebook makes it's money....... unless anyone else knows how to remove them ?

23 April, 2010 - 7:54 pm Lee-Ann - how do I get the HMTL script for my page? do I have to make this up on my own? b/c I have no idea how to do this...any thoughts?

27 April, 2010 - 7:26 pm Dave - Yes you need to code some HTML. Don't despair though. If you go to my facebook welcome page and then from your web browser menu choose VIEW then PAGE SOURCE you will be able to see how I created mine. Just page down until you see the start of my welcome text. Copy this and amend as you see fit :). Typing this from iPhone. Once I get to a pc I will grab the code and paste up here for you Dave

8 June, 2010 - 4:05 pm Claire - Hello Dave, thank you so much for this. It has been very helpful except I am having a bit of a problem. I did everything and have my HTML code and putting it in the body of the FBML but it is not working. Any advice?

10 June, 2010 - 7:53 pm Dave - Claire, is it the HTML not showing correctly or something else ?

14 June, 2010 - 2:46 pm Claire - Nothing is showing. Once I put the HTML in and hit save nothing comes up. It is blank. I tested the HTML code to see if it was that but it works fine. I can not figure this out and why it is not working for me :(

14 June, 2010 - 8:06 pm Dave - Claire, have you definitely followed steps 5-8 as above, as I had same problem until I sussed this bug at the time ?

15 June, 2010 - 6:43 pm Claire - Yes I have. I have actually deleted everything and then put it back on to start over again, but it is not working. When I add the after deleted the whole thing, everything that I had on the last one shows up, like it was deleted from my page but still there. I am actually starting to give up. LOL!!

19 August, 2010 - 11:19 am Martyn - Hi, i have done all of the above but my welcome page only shows half my image, how did you get rid of the left hand facebook items?. I would like it to be a full screen like yours.

19 August, 2010 - 7:34 pm Dave - Martyn I now have same problem. It's all down to this update from Facebook :( We announced plans last October to remove application boxes and application info sections as well as reduce the width of application tabs to optimize for the new profile and Facebook Pages format. We will be moving forward with these changes the week of August 23 and want to help you understand what to expect. Based on feedback from developers, we have committed to the following plans to ensure a smooth transition: * Boxes. We will notify users via messaging in profile boxes and in the Help Center that the "Boxes" tab, boxes on profiles and Pages, and application info sections will be going away. * Application Tabs. Next week, we will give Page admins the ability to preview their custom tabs in the new 520 pixel width so they can modify their layouts as needed. All profile and Page tabs will be resized automatically beginning the week of August 23. These updates are designed to simplify navigation for users, reduce complexity for developers, and enable us to build the next generation of tools for growing your business with Facebook. Subscribe to the developer blog to learn about our new roadmap in the coming weeks.

19 August, 2010 - 7:46 pm Dave - Use the "width" option in your html to adjust images widths to 520 pixels as a quick fix, but in reality it's best to link to a correctly sized image
